JAY-Z Appointed PUMA’s Creative Director

JAY-Z made headlines with wife Beyoncé over the weekend with their surprise joint album, Everything Is Love. From music to the business side of things, the Roc Nation CEO is making news this week with a new title added to his résumé – President of Basketball Operations for PUMA.

The sportswear brand made the announcement on Monday (Jun. 16), following rumors the company was returning to basketball. After the signings of the NBA’s top prospects DeAndre Ayton (Arizona), Marvin Bagley III (Duke), and Zhaire Smith (Texas Tech), PUMA revealed the Brooklyn mogul is joining the team.

“We’ve been working with Roc Nation for quite some time. They’ve been great partners to us for several years,” said Adam Petrick, Puma’s global director of brand and marketing, in a statement. “We’ve done many different deals with many different ambassadors.”

“What’s important to him on a day like today is that it’s clear we’re making a serious push with players like Bagley and Ayton and Smith,” Petrick continued. “We’re making a serious statement about the entry of the category, that we want to be a performance brand, but then also very culturally focused. It’s clear that we’re looking at basketball through the lens of culture, and thinking about the fashion of basketball, the music of basketball, all the aspects of culture around basketball as much as the on court presence that we will have.”

Along with selecting players to join Team PUMA’s new basketball division, JAY-Z will also have a hand in the overall branding for PUMA basketball, from art design to its overall concept.
