Why you still don’t understand the Green New Deal

Political news coverage tends to focus on strategy over substance, and that’s making it less likely that the public will agree on big policy ideas when we need them the most.

The Green New Deal is an ambitious proposal that outlines how the U.S. might begin transitioning towards a green economy over the next ten years. It includes steps like upgrading our power grid and renovating our transportation infrastructure. But most people watching news coverage likely don’t know what’s in the Green New Deal. And that’s because political news coverage tends to focus on strategy over substance, fixating on a bill’s political ramifications rather than its ability to solve a problem. That approach to news coverage is known as “tactical framing,” and research shows it makes audiences at home more cynical and less informed about big policy debates. The result is a cycle of partisanship, where solutions to big problems like climate change are judged on their political popularity rather than their merit.

  1. We're streaming a live Q&A with Carlos in the Video Lab next Tuesday, March 19th on YouTube! It'll be moderated by Coleman, the producer of Vox Darkroom and Carlos' old co-producer for Strikethrough. If you'd like to tune in and ask Carlos questions, consider joining the Video Lab here: http://bit.ly/vox-video-membership

  2. Give Socialists power, wreck the American economy and lower white birth rates??? HMM not white genocide or anything…duhhhhh MARXIST PROPAGANDA!!!!

  3. This video does exactly what it’s says it’s against. It talks about how people talk about something instead of actually talking about the issue.

  4. In 1976 there were groups claiming that by the year 2000 there will be NO more oil in the ground. In 2000 claims were made that Y2K,, a glitch in computer operating date coding, would destroy all computers and society. The Mayan calendar scare was next, predicting the world would end in 2012. Now we have a Green New Deal and they say the world will end in 2030. HOW OFTEN MUST PEOPLE BE MADE FOOLS? Folks, relax, learn, and use your minds, these fear-mongers are using you.

  5. Americans like Bernie Sanders are fighting for something called social democracy like they have in Nordic Europe. It’s just commonly called socialism or communism by misinformed right wingers.

  6. Okay, the problem is the Green New Deal is focusing on the issue of energy completely backwards … !!!
You don't shut down all of our energy use, then use solar or wind power until we figure out new ways to create more sustainable energy generation, that's stupid X's a thousand.
Our Patent Office that has been manipulated by the people who sell us our oil, gas, electricity, & etc.
Our government has ruled (been paid off by the energy producers) to block thousands of inventions that have been by law, restricted from being produced by any devise that is over 75% efficient.
The patents are filed under "National Security" (Yeah, security for the power companies to keep ripping us off.)
The power companies have controlled us much too long (we need to demand an end to this draconian control).
Open The Patent Office & produce those new & efficient means of sustaining energy … problem solved … !!!
Pass the word … this is Your future.

  7. a question to ask (research) is wither journalists fall victims of this trap due to their unpreparedness about the argument itself: if they haven't actually read the content, they probably revert to talking about things that are easy and familiar… because you know…they have to talk and say what they think too in this game

the least you would expect from a good journalist is to have actually read what they are talking about…at least skimmed through the primary source, reading the abstract and conclusions, right?

thanks for the awesome videos that you guys produce 🙂

  8. Ok I came to this video wanting to know what on earth is the green new deal and is it good or bad! But found out that it is about how news channels are covering the green new deal?!!! Not much of a help Vox.

  9. If a WOMAN accuses a MAN then you must LISTEN AND BELIEVE.

  10. Maybe if US voters considered more than just two parties, it wouldn't be so easy for the media to portray important issues as nothing more than a tactical battle between those two parties.

  11. The green new deal is an amazing idea and it would be a great step forward but it won’t be enough. Animal agriculture is the biggest contributor to climate change and if we don’t stop buying animal products & stop subsidizing that industry climate change will progress.

  12. @Vox: I like how your choice of titles makes it really easy to tell who didn't bother to watch before commenting.

I would love to see an actual video about the Green New Deal from you guys though!

  13. How do people watch vox and take it seriously? This is the most insane thing I have ever seen. The deal would cost 91 trillion dollars and Americans would have to work for free and still owe taxes to the government at the end of the year for this to be a feasible idea. So, unless you want to literally be a salve then you should oppose to the green new deal and look for better solutions that are more realistic.

  14. Not trying to come for your weave but honestly this video title should be changed because it’s misleading. I can see how the thought process was to talk about tactical framing with regards to the GND but i really was hoping to find out about the GND not your take on the political strategies that are currently rocking our already messed up political system.

  15. Please let me know if you’re looking for a article writer for your site.

  16. Excellent beat ! I would like to apprentice while you amend your website,
how could i subscribe for a blog web site? The account helped me a acceptable deal.
I had been tiny bit acquainted of this your
    broadcast provided bright clear concept
